Chapter 24: The Room
On Sunday morning I woke up in my own bed.
It was the primary bedroom, with the paint Colby and I had put on twice, and a window that faced south.
The sun came through the curtains in a long gold bar across the floor.
Gabe lay on his back beside me with one arm under his head, awake and watching the ceiling.
"The officer texted," he said. "Kendra's being held. They've charged her with malicious mischief and the forged listing. Brent's been charged too."
"And Colby?"
"He's cooperating. He gave them the Table Four chat."
I nodded.
I waited to feel something large and satisfied, and what I felt was quiet.
The house was empty of strangers. The cat was gone, and the suitcases were gone, and the smell of someone else's skincare had finally left the pillows.
"Come here," I said.
"I'm here."
"Closer."
He rolled over and gathered me in against his chest.
I put my hand on his jaw and felt the grain of his beard.
"I want to do it right," I said. "Like I said."
"You did it fine on the landing."
"Gabe."
He smiled.
I got up and crossed the room in bare feet.
I stood at the south window with the sun on my shoulders and the porch of the corner house across the street.
I took the curtains in both hands and drew them closed.
The room went dim and warm.
When I turned, he had pushed himself up on his elbows and was looking at me the way he looked at a hull he'd finished.
"Come back," he said.
I took off my shirt and let it fall.
I crossed to the bed and knelt on it, and he sat up to meet me.
