Chapter 7: The Hallway Camera
The restraining order hearing was on Tuesday, in the same cold courtroom, in front of the same judge.
Gwen had dressed in cream.
She sat at the petitioner's table with a tissue already in her hand and the boy beside her in a tiny blazer.
She had brought him.
Derek sat directly behind her, close enough to touch her shoulder, and did.
My lawyer leaned toward me and said, very low, "Don't react to anything."
"I won't."
"Even if she's good."
"She's going to be good," I said.
She was.
Gwen took the stand and swore to tell the truth, and then she began to cry, quietly, with her chin up.
"I only wanted to apologize to her," she said. "I was at the front desk, doing my volunteer shift. Holly came in and her face was so angry. She screamed that I had ruined her life."
A woman in the gallery made a soft, sad sound.
"And my son was frightened," Gwen said. "I had to take him out of school for two days."
"Was he in the room?" the judge asked.
"He was in the hallway, Your Honor, with the aide."
"Go on."
"She said I'd pay for it." Gwen pressed the tissue under her eye. "I've never been so afraid."
My lawyer rose for cross-examination.
She did not raise her voice once.
"Ms. Tilley, what day was this?"
"Wednesday."
"What time?"
"Around one."
"And you were at the front desk."
"Yes."
"Alone?"
"Alone," Gwen said. "Everyone else was at lunch."
"Thank you." My lawyer turned. "Your Honor, the school keeps a camera in that hallway, pointed at the front office door. The principal has provided the footage for Wednesday from twelve-thirty to two. I'd like to play it."
