Chapter 22: The Person in the Chair

I called the whole island to the big helipad at eight that morning.

Four hundred guests were still on Grand Brooks, and two hundred staff, and I put them all on the concrete in the sun.

The company pilot stood beside me with his cap on straight.

Fraser stood at my other side with the forecast printed on one sheet, and Tilda sat on the housekeeper's hip in the front row, chewing the rabbit.

The lead investor had flown back in overnight, and she stood at the edge of the crowd in her grey jacket with her arms folded.

"Thank you for coming," I said. "I'll be quick."

I held the sheet up.

"A storm is coming on Friday. It's a bad one, and Fraser says the track will bend west again. Last time, the track bent west after midnight. Last time, people on this island found out what that means."

A murmur went round.

"Everyone leaves Thursday by noon. Guests first. Then staff, and every staff member's family, on the same boats and the same flights as the guests. No one waits behind for anyone else."

A man in a linen shirt put up a hand.

"Mrs. Ostby, I have paid for the week."

"You'll be refunded for the week and given a free one."

"The forecast isn't certain."

"It's certain enough that I wouldn't leave my daughter here," I said. "That's the rule I'm using, and I'd like you to use it too."

He lowered his hand.

The lead investor pushed off from the railing and came to the front.

"May I?" she said.

"Please."

She turned to face the staff, not me.
