Chapter 20: The Name on the Receipt
Franklin McClintock's office had a new carpet, and I was escorted to the middle of it by two men in blazers.
Franklin sat behind the desk.
The agent stood against the wall with his silver recorder.
Lacey came in last, in a pale sweater, and sat on the edge of the leather couch with her hands folded.
"Mrs. Holloway," Franklin said. "You entered my club on a revoked badge."
"It scanned," I said. "It was valid for the whole contract year, and I'd like to see who revoked it."
"That was an administrative matter."
"Then it's a clause."
Lacey made a small, kind sound.
"Daddy, she's had a terrible month. Let's not make it worse."
"I'd like to show Mr. McClintock three things," I said, "and then I'll leave on my own."
He folded his hands.
"Two minutes."
I took the tin of tea out of my diaper bag and set it on his blotter.
"Your invoice listed tea as WAS-05 and the blanket as WAS-06," I said. "This tin is WAS-07. It isn't on your invoice."
He turned the tin over.
"Mr. McClintock has an accounting office," the agent said. "A code is a code."
"May I?" I said.
Franklin pressed a button on his desk phone and said a name.
A thin man in a gray cardigan arrived in under a minute with a laptop.
"WAS-07," Franklin said.
The man typed.
His face changed.
"It's a standing line," he said. "No description. Fifteen hundred dollars a month, paid out of the box account. Opened on August fourteenth last year."
"By whom?"
"By L. McClintock."
