Chapter 24: Every Seat in Plastic
On my wedding day, Lyle wrapped my dress in plastic.
"It's a bag," he said. "It's a good bag. It zips."
He stood in the farmhouse yard in a clean plaid shirt and a bow tie, holding the car door open like a chauffeur.
Every seat of the Corolla was covered in clear plastic, taped at every seam.
The cup holders were wrapped, the headrests were wrapped, and the little tree on the mirror had a plastic bag over it too.
"I'm only driving the bride six hundred feet," Zach's mother said, getting in the front seat beside him. "It's from the house to the barn."
"It's a trip, ma'am," Lyle said. "A trip has a rate."
The plastic crackled all the way across the yard.
In the back seat Gus sat in his car seat in a gray sweatshirt.
It was Zach's sweatshirt, the one from the bar, and I had cut it down to baby size.
"Say it with the word in it," Lyle said, looking at me in the mirror.
"I promise your upholstery will survive this wedding."
"Thank you," he said, very seriously.
The barn smelled of hay and pie.
Zach stood at the far end of it under a string of lights, in a dark suit, beside an uncle who was officiating because he had a certificate from the internet.
The aisle was lined with folding chairs.
Every Sorenson was there, all nine left ears of them, and Lyle's granddaughter in the front row holding a basket of petals she was throwing at her grandfather.
Lyle's friend from the booth sat in the back and wept openly into a program.
I walked down the aisle with Gus on my arm and a bouquet of dried wheat.
Zach watched me the whole way with his ears gone red.
