Chapter 16: Chef Ludlow, Out

Gavin came back for his knives at noon.

He thought the kitchen would still be his.

I know, because I was standing at the pass when he walked in, in jeans and a jacket, with the same crooked smile he used at dinner parties.

"Hey, guys," he said. "Just grabbing my roll."

Eleven cooks looked up from their stations.

Nobody answered him.

The grill chef put down his tongs and turned his back, and then the man at the fryer did, and then the girl at garde manger, until a row of white jackets faced the wall.

Gavin's smile held a moment longer than it should have.

"Come on, guys. Say something."

"Mr. Ludlow."

Tobias stepped out of the dry storage door with a folder under his arm.

He wore the charcoal suit and the steel watch, and he did not raise his voice.

"The Roswell Grand terminates your employment, effective this minute, for taking payments from my sister's private account while you drew a company salary," he said. "Your board seat is revoked. Your badge, please."

"You can't do that. I'm family."

"You were."

Gavin looked at me.

"Linnea, tell him. Tell your husband. We can fix this."

"My husband," I said, trying the word out. "Interesting that you think I'd care what he does to you."

Tobias's eyes flicked sideways at me, once.

Then he held out his hand for the badge.

Gavin took it off his neck, and his fingers shook, and he dropped it in Tobias's palm.

"I need my knives," he said.

"They're hotel property."

"My grandfather gave me that roll."

"Then the hotel will mail it to you after the police have photographed it."
