Chapter 4: Who Sent the Lawyer
"You sent him," I said.
"I did."
"On a Friday night. To my front door. In front of my neighbors."
"Yes."
Marcy set down her coffee on the roof of her car very slowly, which is what she does before she hits someone.
I put my hand on her arm.
"Why?" I said.
Tobias Roswell did not look away.
"Because your boyfriend has been moving money out of my family's company for two years," he said. "And I needed him afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Of losing something. I thought if a lawyer told you the truth, you would confront him. He would panic. A man who panics moves money."
"So I was bait."
"You were the thing he would panic about."
He said it plainly, without softening it, and that was what made me hate him a little less and the plan a little more.
"I didn't know you were pregnant," he said. "I found that out in there."
"He told you?"
"My sister told me, an hour ago, and she called it good news."
His jaw moved once.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I made a mistake about what the truth would cost you."
"You made a mistake?"
"I made a choice. It was wrong."
I looked at his hands, which were not in his pockets.
They hung at his sides, big and still, and the left one had a thin white scar across the knuckles.
I noticed it and looked away.
"Let me tell you what you did," I said. "I'm sleeping on my friend's couch. I'm pregnant by a man who lied about everything. And I found out because a stranger stood on my landing and read it out to the stairwell."
