Chapter 5: Twelve Dollars

The Roswell Grand kitchen was on the lower level, behind a steel door with a sign that said STAFF ONLY.

I walked through it at four in the afternoon with Marcy at my shoulder.

Nobody stopped me.

The whole line was prepping for dinner service, and fourteen cooks in white jackets looked up from their cutting boards.

Gavin stood at the pass with a towel over his shoulder, tasting a sauce off a spoon.

He saw me.

For one second his face was empty.

Then the crooked smile came up, and he set the spoon down.

"Lin. Baby. You came."

"Twelve dollars," I said.

"What?"

"The house fund. Four transfers this morning. Where did my money go?"

I held out my phone.

The cook at the next station stopped chopping.

Gavin looked at the screen, and then at the cooks, and then back at me.

"Not here," he said. "Let's talk in the walk-in."

"No."

"Linnea."

"Here. Where you work. You can say it in front of all of them."

He laid his palms flat on the steel.

"I was going to tell you tonight. I put a deposit on a space. A little restaurant, forty seats, on Fourth Street. Our name on the door. I was going to take you there Sunday."

"Our name."

"Marsden and Ludlow."

"What's the address?"

"What?"

"Fourth Street. Give me the number on the building."

He opened his mouth.

He closed it.

A line cook near the fryers coughed into his sleeve, and I knew that he knew.
