Chapter 8: The Burner
The Athens number on the money-order stub rang half a dozen times, and then a recording said in Greek that the boarding house on Ermou Street had closed in the spring of the year after I left.
It was four in the morning on the floor of the pilot station.
Anders had put a blanket around my shoulders without asking and was sitting a careful arm's length off.
"She never went there," I said.
"Or she went, and left, and nobody forwarded anything."
"Or she never went."
"Say what you know," he said.
"Not what you're afraid of.
"What you know."
I pulled the blanket tighter.
"She drove.
"I was in the passenger seat in her yellow slicker, because she'd put it on me.
"She said she'd go the long way round, down the old county road, and leave the car in the long-term lot at the bus station in Tampa, so nobody would know which way I'd gone.
"She was going to take a bus to Athens, to a boarding house a cousin of her mother's kept on Ermou Street, because she'd always wanted to study there.
"At the bus station she took the slicker off me and put it on herself, because it was pouring and she had to walk back to the car.
