Chapter 10: Whose Song

Hannah's POV

Trent hung his raincoat on the hook by the door.

"Dec," he said, putting out a hand. "Maggie. Hannah. Quite the audience."

Nobody shook it.

He lowered the hand and smiled harder.

"I assume this is about the contract," he said. "Hannah, I didn't realize you were involved in my business meetings now."

"I'm involved in this one," I said.

"It's a little unorthodox, honey."

"So was the champagne."

Declan sat on the arm of the couch.

He didn't look at me, and I understood it was to keep from looking at Trent.

"Trent," he said. "Who wrote Third Floor Window?"

"I did, Dec. You've known that for four years."

"Say it again."

"I wrote it, in the winter of my girlfriend's death." Trent's voice softened on the last word. "I know this is hard to hear, with all the noise lately. But I don't see where it's going."

"Your girlfriend's name was H.B.," Declan said.

"Yes."

"What did H.B. stand for?"

For a half second, nothing moved in his face.

"I don't think that's important."

"It's important to me," Declan said. "I've said it nine hundred times."

"Hannah Brooks," I said.

Trent turned to me slowly.

"That's your name," he said. "What a coincidence."

"It isn't a coincidence," I said. "I wrote it. I was twenty-two, on the third floor of my dorm, in May."

"Sweetheart."

"Don't call me that."

He put a hand on his chest, with a kind, worried face.

"Declan," he said. "I want to be gentle. Hannah has had a very hard week."

"She used to write little tunes at the piano. It was one of the things I loved about her."

"I took one of her sketches and built a real song out of it. I never made enough of a fuss about her part."
