Chapter 5: House Rules

By the third morning Fenny had moved a crate of books, a folding cot and a kettle into the Prince's rooms.

He set the cot beside the window and the kettle on the hearth.

"The bed is yours," he said. "I sleep here."

"We're married," Cavan said.

"We're contracted."

"The pack expects us to share a bed."

"The pack," Fenny said, pouring tea, "doesn't come into the bedroom."

Cavan took the cup and said nothing, which was becoming a habit.

Neither of them had spoken of the desk.

The ink stain had been scrubbed from the floor by the housemaids, who had asked no questions, and a new desk stood in its place.

Fenny worked from a list.

He took Cavan's pulse at waking, wrote down the hour of each change, and kept a little book in which he noted what had happened beforehand.

Cavan had read the entries upside down.

Anger, nine in the morning. Embarrassment, noon. A long look from the steward.

He had changed twice that day. Both times Fenny had put a hand on his shoulder and said, "Out," and both times the change had faded in under two minutes.

It had never faded that fast before.

Fenny noticed it too, and frowned over the little book.

"It's working," Cavan said.

"It's something."

There was a knock, and Roddy came in with a tray.

"Tea for the happy couple," he said, in his easy, kind way. "Cook baked those little lemon things, Fenny, I told her you'd like them."

"Thank you," Fenny said.

Roddy set the tray down and clasped Cavan's shoulder.

"How is the Prime?"

"Better."

"I'm so glad." His eyes went to Cavan's collar, where the cord of the charm showed at the edge. "You're wearing it. I'm touched."
