Chapter 15: A Key With a Tag
Noah Jones arrived at the Grandwell estate on Sunday with a toothbrush in his jacket pocket and nothing else.
He stood in the front hall and tried to remember how to hold his hands.
It was the same hall as the first time, with the same long staircase and the same smell of rosemary from the kitchen.
He had slept in the guest room for two weekends, and every time he had folded the blanket before leaving, so that nothing would show he had been there.
Gracy hugged him before he had the door closed.
"You're thin," she said into his shoulder. "Benjamin, he's thin."
"He's lean," said Benjamin from the kitchen doorway. "I have already adjusted the portions."
Dinner was roast chicken, and Benjamin had labelled the serving dishes with a tag on each one.
Noah's was labelled NOAH, and so was the napkin.
He ate everything, and Gracy watched every bite and said nothing, which was how he knew she was counting.
When the plates were cleared, Benjamin took a small box from his jacket and set it in front of Noah.
"This is the agenda item," he said.
Inside the box was a brass key on a ring, and a laminated tag.
The tag said N. JONES, and under it, in Benjamin's neat print: Front door. Back door. Garage. No sign-in required.
Noah looked at it for a long time.
"I don't understand," he said. "Guests get a schedule."
"Guests do," said Benjamin. "Family gets a key."
Noah's throat closed, and he stared at the tag so he would not have to look up.
He had never owned a key to a house.
At the orphanage every door had been locked from the outside, and the staff had carried the keys.
