Chapter 18: Clear Bottle
The suite had a second bedroom, and by seven o'clock Noah had turned it into a ward.
He stripped the bed down to the sheet and built a nest of hotel blankets in the corner.
He set out water, a thermometer, a clearing pill in a paper cup, and a clipboard with a blank intake form.
Raven watched from the doorway with a towel over his shoulder, holding the door open for no reason.
Thompson sat on the edge of the bed with the clear bottle between his knees.
His hood was down, his face was flushed, and his hands were shaking so hard the water slopped.
"I took them every day for six years," he said. "Since I was eighteen. I never missed a day, not once."
"I know," said Noah. "I filled the prescription."
Thompson laughed, and it cracked in the middle.
"My father said it would ruin me," he said. "That I'd lose my scholarship, my place, everything. He said nobody would ever want a team captain who smelled like that."
Raven came in and sat down on the floor, with his back against the wall.
"That's a rotten thing for a father to say," he said.
"It's what happened to me." Thompson swallowed. "I've never said the word to anybody. Not out loud. Not to a person who could hear."
"You can say it here," said Noah.
Thompson shut his eyes.
His jaw worked, and for a long moment nothing came out.
"I'm an omega," he said.
It was barely a whisper.
"Again," said Raven. "Louder. The door's shut. Nobody's here but a doctor and a guy who never called a timeout until this week."
