Chapter 4: Clearing Pill
Raven looked at the pill for a long time.
"Is it a suppressant?"
"It's a clearing pill," Noah said. "It flushes the old suppressant out of your system. The heat you've been holding back comes through tonight and runs its course."
"And then?"
"And then you're a person with a body that works."
Raven's pulse was loud in his ears, and the wet heat between his legs pulsed with it.
He had never taken anything a stranger handed him.
But Noah had not rushed him, and Noah's palm had not moved.
He took the pill and swallowed it dry.
"Good," Noah said softly. "Boots on. Not here. Half the team has a nose, and Thompson's tent is twenty feet away."
They went out through the flap into the cold.
Noah gave Raven his own jacket and carried the lantern.
They walked a long way into the pines on a path nobody had made.
The scent was already on Raven, thick and sweet, rolling off his skin, and he felt every step of it in his thighs.
"Is this normal?" he asked. "I'm leaking."
"It's called slick."
"It's what?"
"Slick. Your body makes it so the heat doesn't hurt. Omegas have a cycle, and a heat is the peak of it." Noah glanced over. "Did your school teach you this?"
"My biology textbook had a whole chapter on omegas."
"Good."
"It was a diagram of a trophy."
Noah made a sound that was almost a laugh.
"We'll start with the vocabulary."
They stopped in a clearing with a flat boulder and a ring of dark trees around it.
The nearest sound was water far away.
