Chapter 23: Release
"Get out of my daughter's room," I said.
Tate kept smiling.
"Our daughter. The paper says so. I'm her father, Willa, and I have a right to be photographed with my child."
"Is that what this is? A picture?"
"The board asked me to repair the family's image. A new father, a new beginning."
The cameraman lifted his lens to my face.
I looked down at my sleeping girl, and then at Dot, who had stood up from her chair with her purse in her hand.
"Not in here," I said. "Downstairs. Lobby. Where everyone can see."
Tate's smile flickered.
"You're being dramatic."
"I'll do it in front of the same marble you were so proud of," I said. "Unless you're afraid of a crowd."
He wasn't, in the end.
He never was, when he thought he was the one holding the camera.
They wheeled me down in a chair, with my daughter on my chest and Jerome's hand on my shoulder.
Linnea walked on my other side, holding her own baby, in her blue cardigan.
The marble lobby was full of people: visitors, a janitor with a mop, two women in scrubs, a guard by the elevator who had once told me I was in the wrong place.
He looked at me, and at the baby.
He looked at Tate and the camera.
"Ma'am," he said quietly. "Anything you need."
"Just stand there," I said.
Tate stepped into the middle of the floor with his papers.
"This is a petition for joint custody and visitation, filed this morning. My father's counsel..."
"Your father's counsel sent my sister-in-law a letter yesterday," Linnea said.
She said it clearly, as if reading a schedule.
"It says they no longer represent you. Neither does the board's. You're paying for this out of your own pocket."
