Chapter 15: Front Row Seat

Harrison's POV

Lorna opened her door in a gray sweatshirt with a mug in her hand, and she was smiling.

"You look awful," she said. "Come in. I made coffee."

I had driven from Wisconsin in under two hours and rehearsed what to say the whole way.

None of it came.

Her apartment was exactly as I remembered, white couch, a shelf of paperbacks, a camel coat on the hook by the door.

I had been in this room perhaps fifty times in twelve years.

She had never once let me stay long.

"I'm not here for coffee," I said.

"Sit anyway."

"I heard the recording of my mother."

"I thought you might." She sat on the arm of the couch and crossed one ankle over the other. "Harrison, I tried to protect you. I didn't want you to find out like this. That girl has been working you for years."

"Walnuts."

Her smile held.

"I'm sorry?"

"My mother was talking about a pastry chef, Lorna. March, two years ago, on the phone to you. You cut it down to a threat."

She said nothing.

I watched her face, and I waited for the shock, the tears, the hand over the mouth.

None of it came.

She set the mug down on the coffee table very carefully.

"Your mother remembered," she said. "Of course she did."

"Answer me."

"Fine." She stood. "Yes. I cut it."

I had thought I was ready for that.

The floor still dropped.

"The memo from Kate's drunk night," I said. "The rest of the sentence."

"Yes."
