Chapter 18: The Guest List

The board had withdrawn its motion last Friday in four minutes.

Sylvia told me so on Tuesday night, at her dining table in the penthouse, with a pen behind her ear and her reading glasses on her nose.

"I walked in with the tin of invitations," she said. "I put it on the glass and I opened the lid. I said, who would like to explain the typing."

"What did they say?"

"Nothing at all. The chair asked if I'd like coffee."

She slid a ream of paper across the table.

"This is the guest list for the fourteenth."

The gala had been moved, with a press release that said only that it was rescheduled in honor of the foundation's friends.

Everyone in Chicago would be there, because everyone wanted to see.

"I want you to read every name," Sylvia said, "and tell me which ones to seat near you."

I put my finger on the first page.

There were four hundred names.

Halfway down the second column, I found two that I knew.

"The woman in gold," I said. "She wore a gold dress and a fur coat."

"She's a donor." Sylvia tapped the list. "Her husband owns a bank."

"And the man in the velvet jacket?"

"A blogger, with a very large following and a very small conscience. He was the one who filmed you." Sylvia took the pen from behind her ear. "I invited them both."
