Chapter 5: Calloway Partners

Lacey's text had come in at six that morning: "Whatever he told you to keep you hungry, I have it in writing. Tell me where."

I had answered one line, that I would call her after ten.

I did not want her proof and Jonah's offer in the same hour.

Calloway Partners was in an old printing house on the north bank of the river, with brick walls and tall windows that looked at the Stroud Group tower.

I stood in the lobby with my box on my hip and my résumé in a folder I had updated twice in the cab.

The receptionist looked at the box and then at the folder.

"You must be Ms. Garrity," she said. "He's been standing at the elevator for twenty minutes."

I turned around.

A tall man was leaning against the elevator door with his sleeves rolled to the elbow and his hands in his pockets.

He had short dark hair going gray at the temples, and a stubborn jaw.

"I was not standing here for twenty minutes," he said. "I was standing here for twelve."

"She said twenty."

"She exaggerates when I'm nervous." He took his hands out of his pockets. "Jonah Calloway."

I shook his hand.

His palm was dry and warm, and he did not let go of mine as quickly as he could have.

I noticed that I had noticed.

"Nell Garrity," I said. "I got your email."

"I know. I also watched the video."

"What video?"

"Of you asking your boss a question in front of a hundred and forty people. It has forty thousand views." He gestured down the hall. "Come in before the coffee gets cold. I'm told it's worse cold."
