Chapter 6: Verity

I could hear her through the phone from three feet away.

"Is she with you?" Verity Gadsden said.

Lachlan looked at me.

"Who?"

"Don't. Is Ione Dufresne standing next to you, yes or no?" Verity said.

"Yes."

"Then put me on speaker, or give her the phone. I don't care which."

Lachlan hesitated.

I held out my hand.

He gave me the phone, and I put it to my ear.

"This is Ione."

"Good," Verity said. Her voice was a lower, rougher thing than the society pages had suggested. "I'm in a car in front of an address on Habersham Street that I got from a very bribable doorman. Is it your sister's?"

"Why?"

"Because I'd rather yell at you in person than on a speakerphone with him breathing on it," Verity said.

"I'm not sure I want to be yelled at."

"I'm not going to yell at you," Verity said. "I'm going to yell at everyone else. You can sit there and drink something."

She hung up.

I gave the phone back to Lachlan.

"She's coming to Posey's."

"Ione, let me go with you," Lachlan said.

"No."

"I should be there."

"For what? To explain?" I tilted my head. "You've had a week."

He stood on the loading dock with the phone in his hand and the recycling bins at his back.

He did not follow me when I went inside to finish my shift.

At seven o'clock Posey's doorbell rang.

Posey checked the peephole, and this time her whisper was delighted.

"It's the fiancee. She brought wine."

"She's not the fiancee," I said.

"She brought wine, Ione."

Verity came in wearing jeans and an old Charleston Yacht Club sweatshirt, with her auburn hair shoved behind her ears.
