Chapter 11: Still Married

The townhouse door stuck in winter, and I still knew exactly where to lean.

I put my shoulder to it and it gave.

The smell of my old life came out into the cold: sage candle, cast iron, his cologne.

He stood behind me on the stoop with his hands in his pockets.

I walked in and turned on the kitchen light and filled a glass at the tap.

"Drink," I said.

He drank it down, and I filled it again, and he drank that.

His eyes were a little clearer.

Not sober, but clear enough that I could see what he was looking at, which was me.

"One night," I said.

"Hal."

"One night, in this house. Nothing carries out of this room. Not a word of it. In the morning I go back to Marta's and you go back to being the man who paid me."

"Okay," he said.

"Say it."

"Nothing carries out of the room," he said.

I put my hands on his chest and shoved him backward.

He hit the kitchen island and caught himself on it with both palms.

I was already pulling his scarf off.

I dropped it on the floor.

I unbuttoned his jacket and shoved it off his shoulders, and he let me.

His breath came hard through his nose.

"I hate you," I said.

"I know."

"I hate that I know how you taste."

He made a noise low in his throat and caught my face in both hands and kissed me.

It was not gentle.

It was the kiss of two people who knew every angle of each other's mouths and had spent a month wishing they didn't.

His beard scraped my chin.

I bit his lower lip until he hissed, and tasted whiskey and salt.

"Upstairs," I said against his mouth.

We went up with our hands all over each other.

His fingers tangled in the back of my sweater, and my shoulders hit the stairwell wall.

A framed photo of our wedding rattled on its nail.

I pulled it off the wall and put it face down on the landing.

Then I dragged him into the bedroom by his belt.
