Chapter 16: The Last Paper

The Tribune ran it Tuesday morning, under a headline I will not repeat.

Marta read it to me over the bakery counter in a flat voice, and halfway through she put the phone down.

"You don't need to hear the rest."

"Read it."

"Hal," Marta said.

"I want every word."

She read the texts.

Dominik, in March, to Lena: She's fine. She's furniture. She does her job and goes to bed.

Dominik, in June: When the restaurant stabilizes I'll deal with it. Hal won't make a fuss. She never makes a fuss.

Dominik, in August: Dead weight, but kind dead weight.

I stood with my hands on the counter.

It was the worst thing I had ever heard about myself, in my own husband's typing.

A strange thing happened as Marta finished.

I was not crying.

My throat was dry and clear, and I felt something heavy go quiet inside me.

I had spent months wondering whether he had ever loved me.

Now I knew what he had written when he thought nobody would ever read it, and it was not hate.

It was contempt, which is lazier, and which cost him nothing.

There was one more paragraph at the bottom of the story.

A spokesman for Mr. Kral confirmed that the messages are authentic.

In a statement, Mr. Kral said: "I wrote every one of those messages."

"They are cruel and untrue and I am ashamed of them."

"Halina Sokol is the most talented person I have ever worked with. I have nothing else to add."
