Chapter 24: Piotr Steps Aside
The paramedics came in four minutes.
They sat Dominik on a ballroom chair and pressed a gauze square against his cheekbone.
His mother stood behind him with both hands on his shoulders.
She had not said a word.
She was five feet one inch of cardigan and she looked at me over his head.
"He needs stitches," she said, finally. "I'll take him."
"I'll go with you."
"No."
It was not unkind.
"This is your night, Halinka," she said, and it was the first time she had ever called me that. "Go back. He will be fine. I have him."
Dominik looked up at me.
There was blood drying along his jaw.
"Go," he said. "Please. Hal. Go win something."
I stood in the aisle and watched them walk out, her hand on his arm.
Then I went back to my table.
Everyone looked at me.
Babcia handed me a napkin without a word.
