Chapter 8: Sisters in the Water
"Wait here," I told Gabe.
He turned off the truck's lights and stayed in the cab.
I went through the side gate and along the cedar path I had walked a thousand times.
The tub lights lit the deck from below, a steady blue.
Mindy sat in the water alone, in a gray T-shirt, with her arms folded on the rim and her chin resting on them.
She had been crying. I could see it from the gate.
"Glen's at his mother's," she said, without looking up. "He gave me the gate code last week. Don't worry, I'm not here to drink your wine."
"There isn't any wine."
"I noticed."
I walked to the edge of the deck and stopped.
She looked very small.
At the lumberyard cafe she had looked ready to take the whole room apart. Alone in the water she looked tired.
"What are you doing here?" I said.
"I wanted to see it with nobody in it."
"It's a hot tub."
"It's where he asked me to marry him. Nine years ago, in the old one, before he bought this." She laughed and wiped her face. "I said yes. In a hot tub. Isn't that stupid?"
"It's not stupid."
"It's incredibly stupid."
She put the back of her wrist against her mouth, and I laughed, and I did the same without thinking.
We both stopped.
We looked at each other across the steam, two women with a hand on our own mouths.
It was a small moment, but I felt it all the way to my feet.
I put my arm down.
Mindy put hers down too, a half second later.
Neither of us said anything.
"Sit down," Mindy said. "You look dead."
