Chapter 10: Madam at Home
Madam Gu received her in the sunroom at five o'clock, among the orchids, with a pot of tea already poured.
"Sit, dear. You look as if you haven't eaten."
Wenxin did not sit.
"Where is Mingxuan?"
"At the lake villa, with two nurses and a very good doctor." Madam lifted her cup with her left hand. "He was getting restless in that hospital. The family should look after its own."
"I want to see him."
"Of course you do. And you will."
Madam set the cup down. She opened the drawer of the little table beside her and took out a photograph.
It was the one from the studio gate.
Wenxin's own face looked up at her, turned to Haoran's, wide open.
"Careless," Madam said gently. "At my age I notice. You have always been a poor liar, Wenxin. It's one of the nice things about you."
The room was very quiet. A drop of water ticked from a watering can onto the tiles.
"You sent this," Wenxin said.
"I keep it safe. That is different."
"What do you want?"
"Only what I have always wanted. For the family to be well." Madam took a document from the same drawer and laid it on the tea table. "You will sign this, a proxy for Mingxuan's voting shares. You are his wife, so it is yours to give. A formality."
"And?"
"And on Sunday, in front of the board, you will say that you have chosen your husband. That you are going to stay by his bed and leave the film." Madam's voice did not change. "Haoran will understand. He is a sensible man."
