Chapter 9: Third Take

Haoran's arm tightened across her ribs and loosened again.

"Ten minutes," he called toward the door, in the level voice that never gave anything away. "I'm coming."

Footsteps went off across the gravel.

Wenxin sat up with the blanket held to her chest.

"They saw nothing," she said. "They didn't see anything."

"They heard the director knock on my door at six in the morning." Haoran was already pulling on his shirt. "They'll see what they like."

"It's the third term."

"I know which term it is." He looked at her over his shoulder, and one corner of his mouth moved. "You stayed."

"I fell asleep."

"That is how people stay."

She threw a sock at him. He caught it left-handed without looking.

For one second the trailer was warm and ordinary, a morning in the middle of a life.

Then she remembered the phone call she had overheard the afternoon before, and the second of warmth went out.

"Go on," she said. "The Captain is waiting."

The scene they shot at seven was the one where Su Min wakes in his coat.

The director had seen the weather report and rewritten it. She would sleep through the end of the storm on a bench in a rail station, wake up under the Captain's coat, and find him sitting across from her, not sleeping.

Wenxin did not need to act it.
