Chapter 7: Mine to Look After

Thomas pulled the sheet over them both. "Come in," he called, and then looked at Lucas. "Sorry. Is that allowed?"

"It's my room," Lucas said. "It's allowed."

Noah came in and stood at the foot of the bed with his arms wrapped around himself.

He had not changed out of his stage clothes, and a smear of eyeliner ran under one eye.

"His name is Valentine," Noah said. "He's a lord. He sits in Abysis's court as an equal, which means he can walk anywhere in this city and no one can stop him."

"The one you took to bed."

"The one who took us," Noah said. "That was the winter before the exile. He invited the three of us up to his rooms. We went because we wanted to. Abysis called it theft."

"But Valentine kept his seat."

"Valentine kept his seat," Luke said from the doorway.

He had come up the stairs without a sound.

"And tonight he sat in a VIP booth and watched us play," Luke said. "That means something. We don't know what."

Lucas sat up against the headboard.

"Then we find out," he said. "Together. Nobody goes to see him alone."

"Understood."

Thomas squeezed his hand under the sheet.

Luke nodded once and went back downstairs.

Noah stayed.

He was looking at Thomas's bare shoulder and at the mark on Lucas's collarbone, and his face had gone very still.

"Thomas," Noah said. "Give us a minute."

Thomas looked from one to the other, gathered his clothes, and slipped out with a shy smile.

The door shut.
