Chapter 23: The Lantern Song
On the last Saturday of March, a new sign went up on the harbor wall at Shipu.
It was painted white on blue, with a lantern drawn at one end.
NING WEIGUO RESCUE STATION.
Zhe stood in the wind on the quay in his father's old oilskin.
Sun Baoguo had kept it in a locker for eleven years.
Zhe read the sign three times.
"Well?" Sun said beside him.
"The W is crooked."
"It's a very fine W."
"It's perfect," Zhe said, and his voice shook.
The crew of the station stood in a line in their orange jackets, a dozen men and two women.
Hanjing stood at the far end of it, in a borrowed jacket two sizes too small, with his hands clasped behind his back.
He had not said a word since the car.
He was looking at the sea.
It was grey-green and ruffled, with a long swell rolling in from the south.
Gulls hung over the breakwater.
The tide was making.
"Does it frighten you?" Zhe had asked him in the car.
"Yes."
"We can stay in the harbor."
"No," Hanjing had said. "I want to see it with you."
