Chapter 12: Armitage
Langston stood at the curb with his mouth slightly open.
"That's not," he said. Then he stopped.
He turned to me.
"Is that true?"
"You woke up on the fifth morning and she was there," I said. "That's all you saw."
"I asked for you. The first night." He frowned hard, like he was trying to see through fog. "I remember asking where you were."
"You asked for Jillian."
He flinched.
"Every night," the housekeeper said. "Your wife answered you anyway. She said, she's coming, go to sleep."
Langston looked at the box on the hood of his car.
My grandmother's cast iron pan was sticking out the top.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he said.
"You never asked who was sitting in the chair."
He didn't have an answer.
The housekeeper picked up her box again and walked it past him to the stairs.
After a while, Langston got back in his car.
He sat there with his hands on the wheel for ten minutes.
Then he drove away.
The video from the gala was everywhere by Monday.
