Chapter 11: Casserole Emergency

The knock came at nine, and it was the knock of a woman holding a casserole dish with both hands.

"Joni! It's me! I can smell that you're alive!"

I was in a robe, with my hair every which way and a very large man asleep on his stomach in my bed.

I opened the door two inches.

Cass looked at my face, then at the boot in my hand.

Then she looked at the dog on the rug, who looked very pleased.

"Oh my God," she said.

"It's not what it looks like."

"It's exactly what it looks like. Let me in. I brought a hash brown casserole."

"You brought a casserole at nine in the morning?"

"I brought it for an emergency." She pushed past me. "I didn't know it would be this kind."

Holt came out of the bedroom in his jeans, pulling on a shirt.

His hair stood up on one side.

He stopped in the doorway.

Cass put the dish down on the counter very slowly.

"Hi," she said.

"Hi."

"I'm Cass. I made breakfast."

"I'm Holt. I'm, uh."

"I know who you are," she said. "You're the man who sat in his truck outside her building for two hours. She told me last night in six text messages."

"That wasn't two hours."

"It was almost two hours. I did the math."

He looked at me, trapped, and I put my hand over my mouth.

"Sit down," Cass said. "Eat. And before you say anything, Holt, I'm going to say one thing."
