Chapter 9: Nobody Swings First
Holt's POV
I had driven across town in the dark without remembering any of it.
Her building came up on my left, and a white truck sat under the streetlight, and Joni stood between the truck and the front walk with her jacket held shut in her fist.
The man next to her was smiling.
I got out.
I've been told that when I'm angry I get quiet, and that the quiet is worse.
It's true.
It's what my father did, and it was what I learned from him before I learned anything else.
You don't swing first, Holt.
You stand there until the other man does something he can't take back.
Brent Wegner turned and looked at me, and the smile went on, one tooth at a time.
"Evening, big guy," he said. "Or morning. I can't tell."
I said nothing.
"She's fine. I'm walking her up."
"She lives here," I said. "You don't."
"We were having a talk."
I looked at Joni.
She looked back at me, and her eyes were wet and furious and tired, and she didn't need me to say anything.
She turned to Brent.
"Get off my sidewalk," she said.
It was the quietest she'd been all week, and it worked better than anything I could have done.
Brent's grin slipped.
He glanced at me, at the dog watching from my cab with his chin on the glass, and at the camera I hadn't noticed on his phone, held low against his thigh.
He'd been waiting for me to hit him.
I understood that all at once, and my hands, which had closed, opened again.
