Chapter 19: Tobias's POV

Tobias's POV

The board of Radcliff Hospitality met at eight on Sunday morning, in the room where my father had once fired a chef for lying about the fish.

Five people sat around the table.

The chairman had known me since I was nine years old. He did not look at me when I came in.

At the far end sat a thin man in a gray suit, whom nobody had introduced.

"Mrs. Lowell's attorney," the chairman said at last. "He has a concern."

"I'm sure he does."

The man in gray opened a folder. "Mr. Radcliff, the lead designer you have placed on the lakefront hotel is personally liable for nine hundred thousand dollars. The note comes due in thirty days."

"It does."

"She cannot pay it. Your investors will be exposed to the claim if her studio is attached."

"And she has humiliated a respected family at a public gathering," the chairman added, quietly. "We saw the video."

"It's on every phone in Chicago," said a woman at his left.

I let them finish.

Then I stood, because I did not want to say what came next from a chair.

"I'm going to tell you what that video shows," I said. "It shows a woman who built the Linden, the Sparrow and the Pembroke, and had her name struck off each one by a family that spent her father's money."

"That doesn't change the liability," said the man in gray.

"No."

I put my hands flat on the table.
