Chapter 10: Front Row, My Family
"Answer it," I said.
Colt's thumb hovered over the screen.
The dining room had emptied out around us, and the cook's pie plates sat stacked on the sideboard.
"I'm not going to," he said.
He turned the phone face down on the table, and it buzzed itself in a slow circle until it stopped.
"You looked at it for a long time."
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because for six years, when that name came up, I picked up," he said. "My hand has to learn something else. It's slow."
It was an honest answer, and it made me angrier than a lie would have.
I got up and shut the dining room door.
I did not want the children to hear this, and I did not want anyone else to hear it either.
Then I turned and said the thing I had carried since the Grammys.
"A week before the show you called me."
Colt went still.
"You said, win or lose, I want you and the kids in the front row. My family. You said it in that voice, the warm one, the one I hadn't heard since Birdie was a baby."
"Lin..."
"I had found her messages eight months before. I knew. I stayed anyway, because I thought one day you'd turn around and see what you were doing. And then you called, and you said family, and I thought, he's turning around."
My voice shook, and I let it.
"I believed you," I said. "I sat in the fourth row with our children and I believed you. That's the thing I can't forgive. Not the kiss. The kiss was the end of it. It's that you made me hope, one more time, and then you walked right past me."
