Chapter 10: On His Knees

I walked across the yard with my hands at my sides.

I didn't run.

Behind me I heard Roan say "Let her," and the heavy boots of a hundred men stop where they were.

By the time I reached the chain-link, the whole shift had drifted over from the loading docks.

They stood in a loose ring on the gravel in their orange vests, with their arms folded, and nobody said a word.

Camryn saw me coming and tipped her phone to get all of me in the frame.

"There she is," she said to the screen, in a voice that shook on purpose. "My own sister. She stole my boyfriend. She had my father's life threatened so she could marry for money, and then she took my Hartwell place, and now..."

"Camryn," I said.

"Don't touch me!"

"I'm not touching you."

I stopped in front of the fence.

The little red LIVE dot glowed in the corner of her screen, and under it a counter ticked up.

"Fourteen hundred people," I said. "That's the class chat, and Hartwell's group page, and half of the school. That's good. I want them all here."

I held up the green notebook.

Her face changed.

"You wanted to tell them what I did to our family," I said to the lens. "I'd like to read them what your mother did."

"That's private!"

"You made it public. You made the video public, remember?"

I opened to the last page of June.

I didn't read it loudly.

I read it plainly.

"'R. extra, five hundred dollars. For the video at the graduation party. Kitchen, morning light, he should have his hand in her hair.'"

I looked up.

"That's in your mother's handwriting," I said. "And this one's for you. 'Six. C. in.' You're number six on her list."

The counter on the screen climbed.

Fifteen hundred.

Sixteen hundred.
