Chapter 19: Her Name

The associate dean called on Monday morning, from her own number, without an assistant.

I took it on the end of the dock with the phone against my ear and the lake flat as a plate.

"Ms. Landry," she said. "The withdrawal form is void.

"The signature on it did not match your father's, the detective sent us a statement, and the forged page has been removed from your file.

"Your seat is yours.

"Miss Camryn Landry's deposit is being returned in full this afternoon."

I sat down on the boards because my legs asked me to.

"Thank you," I said.

"Don't thank me. I read your essay twice."

"About the desk."

"About your mother's desk, and the ring on the wood where she put her coffee," the dean said. "I put that ring on a slide at our last committee meeting.

"One thing remains.

"I need your housing form signed by you and nobody else.

"I'm sending it now."

The email came in while we were still on the line.

It was one page.

At the bottom, a line waited for a signature.

I borrowed a pen from Nash, who had been pretending to read a fishing magazine ten feet away.

I wrote my name slowly, so I could feel every letter.

Sutton Landry.

No flourish, and no one's initials beside it.

I scanned the page with my phone and sent it before I could shake.
