Chapter 19: Every Chair Turned
My father did not touch the envelope.
He looked at the old man with the cane.
"Old friend," he said softly. "Sit down."
"No."
It was one word, and it landed on the table.
"I carried every paper you ever signed for forty years," the old man said. "I carried this one to the Salernos myself. I kept the original, because I knew what it was."
"You kept it for yourself."
"I kept it for the day somebody asked." He turned to the room. "Nobody asked for fourteen years, and I got old."
Tiberio stepped forward and picked up the envelope.
His hands shook so that the paper rattled.
He drew out one yellowed sheet and held it open in front of the table.
I stood at his shoulder, and I read it.
It was five lines in my father's square hand.
A name, an accountant's name.
A date, the eighth of March.
*By the road, in the dark. No one is to be harmed but the man. Tell the boy to drive.*
And at the bottom, my father's signature, with the long tail on the last letter that he had put on every report card I ever brought home.
"No one is to be harmed but the man," Tiberio read aloud.
His voice cracked on the last word.
"There was a woman in the car," said Nerina, from the head of the table. "There was a child in the back."
She hadn't moved.
The two men who had held her arms stood at the wall with their hands hanging empty.
My father looked down the length of the table.
Thirty faces looked back, and not one of them was on his side.
I knew that look.
I had worn it in a church.
"Papa," I said. "Say it."
"Marisa."
