Chapter 4: The Second Night
By eleven that night the room was quiet, and Rosa was asleep in a plastic bassinet beside my bed.
Ruggero's phone was still face down on the windowsill.
He had left it behind.
I lay there and watched it light up every ten minutes, and I didn't touch it.
At midnight it lit up and stayed lit.
The screen read "Nerina," and under it, "Please."
I turned my head away.
At one in the morning the door opened, and I thought it was him.
It was my father.
He came in with his coat still buttoned and one of his men waiting outside.
He looked at the bassinet for a long moment, then at me.
"She's small," he said.
"Thirty-five weeks. She's healthy."
"She has Salerno eyes."
"She has her own eyes."
He sat down on the visitor's chair and rested his hands on his knees.
He had been the head of the Tedesco family for thirty years, and he never raised his voice to get his way.
"Ruggero took Nerina home," he said. "She couldn't stop shaking. He will be back by morning."
"I'm not waiting for him."
"The families will accept a small ceremony on Sunday. The priest has agreed. You come home to the Bay Ridge house tonight, and the baby comes with you."
"No."
"Marisa."
"I'm not coming back, Papa."
His voice stayed soft.
"I let you have your little rebellion in the street. The Salernos have been very patient. But a child born to your family belongs to both houses, and I will not have her carried off to Chicago."
