Chapter 14: Grocery Roses
Six designers stopped pretending to work.
I looked at Brandi.
Twenty-eight years old, crying on Claudette's linen couch.
A month ago she'd smiled at me over my own birthday cake.
"Yours," I said.
"He said he was putting it in my name after the divorce. He said you'd agreed to sign it over."
She wiped her face with her sleeve.
"He said you were fine with it."
"He tells everybody I'm fine with things."
She laughed, a terrible little laugh.
"I quit my job for him. I gave up my apartment. My mom won't talk to me."
"I'm sorry about your mom," I said.
I meant it.
That was the strange part.
"But you walked into my house in a red dress on my birthday. You don't get to cry on my couch about it."
Claudette had come down the stairs.
"Miss Kett. You should go."
Brandi picked up her purse.
At the door she turned around.
"He's going to come for you, you know. He needs that house. He'll say anything."
Then she was gone.
That night, Madison's phone was quiet.
Brandi's wasn't.
At ten she posted a long video from her car.
