"Mom."
"Why did you take this?"
He was quiet a long time.
"Because it felt wrong," he said. "Even then. I didn't know why I was taking it. I just did."
"And you kept it a year."
"I kept telling myself you'd signed at home. That he was just finishing the paperwork."
"You knew I hadn't."
"I knew." His voice cracked. "Madison called me tonight. She was at your place. She said you let her in."
"I did."
"Would you let me in?"
I looked out my window at the dark alley.
"Come to the Harbor Grand on Friday," I said. "And bring that photo."
Friday, December twelfth, the Harbor Grand opened its doors for the first time in twenty-one years.
Four hundred people came.
Bankers. Councilmen. The mayor of Gulfport.
Every church lady I'd ever cooked a casserole for.
I wore a long green dress Claudette lent me.
It matched the bar.
"On purpose," she said, zipping me up. "You match your own room."
