Chapter 16: Forty-Nine

Four hundred people held their breath.

Glenn stayed on one knee with the velvet box shaking in his hand.

I opened my little beaded clutch.

The coin purse was in it.

I'd moved it there out of habit that afternoon, the way I'd carried it every day since the bar.

I unsnapped it.

I took out my old wedding ring.

Thin gold, worn flat on one side from twenty-five years of dishes.

I bent down and set it in the velvet box, next to his diamond.

"You can have them both," I said.

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

"You didn't leave me at forty-eight because you fell in love, Glenn. You left because you'd already taken everything worth taking."

I straightened up.

"You don't want me back. You want the house back. You want somebody in the kitchen saying it was all fine."

I looked out at the room.

At Carol Pettus. At the mayor. At the woman from the bank.

"It wasn't fine. I'm done saying it was."

I turned to Walt.

"I'm sorry about your party, Walt."

Walt Haskell picked his microphone up off the stage floor.

He looked down at my husband, still on his knee.

"Glenn," he said, into the mic, very calm. "Get up. You're done in my building."

Glenn got up slowly.

"Walt, the trim's not finished..."

"My new builder will finish it Monday."

Walt turned to the room.

"Folks, I apologize. The bar's open. It's a beautiful bar. The lady designed it."

People laughed.

Then, at the back, somebody started clapping.

It rolled all the way to the stage.

Glenn walked out through the crowd with the velvet box in his fist.

Nobody stopped him.

The woman from the bank followed him out, already dialing.

Tyler was still at the foot of the stage.

He looked up at me.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I came down the steps.

"Send that to Bev tonight," I said. "Then come to dinner Sunday."

His face crumpled.

I hugged him.

He was stiff for one second.

Then he held on the way he did at six, after a nightmare.

Madison was right behind him.

She had her phone out.

"I'm fixing it," she said. "Right now."

She turned the camera on herself, right there in the ballroom.

Her voice shook.

"I told a lot of people my mom was unstable. That was a lie. My dad told it to me, and I passed it on."

She took a breath.

"My mom designed this room. She's the most stable person I've ever met. I'm sorry, Mom."

She posted it.

Then she put the phone in her purse and cried into my shoulder.

Caleb pushed in between his brother and sister.
