Chapter 21: The Naming

Bram got out of the Audi in a black tuxedo with his hair combed and his smile already on.

Joan stepped out on the other side, in silver silk and her pearls, and the doorman handed her a program.

Bram saw me in the green dress, with Roderick's arm under my hand, and the smile slipped for one second and came back.

"Ines," he said. "You came."

"I was invited."

"You look beautiful." He glanced at the man beside me, and at the woman holding a baby, and he decided not to see either of them. "Mom said you'd come around. Come in with us, please. I want you at my table."

"No."

"Inés," Joan said, with her fixed smile. "We agreed."

"We didn't agree to anything," I said. "I'll see you inside."

I walked past them through the doors with Roderick on my right, and the plow driver behind me, saying to nobody in particular, "Is the dessert before or after?"

The atrium was gold and glass, and three hundred people sat at round tables under strings of lights.

Bankers, donors, the board, the foundation ladies in jewels, and every nurse who had been allowed off the floor.

I sat at a table near the front between Roderick and the charge nurse, who wore a black dress and a look that said she had not come for the chicken.

Across the room at the head table, Bram pulled out his mother's chair.
