He Left Me in the Snow for Her Labor, So I Delivered It novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Rapid Sequence

The stretcher hit the double doors at a run, and the paramedic called the numbers over the noise.

"Thirty-year-old female, thirty weeks, restrained driver, rolled on Lake Shore Road. Pressure ninety over forty and dropping. Rigid abdomen."

I put my hand on the patient's abdomen, and it was hard and tender under my palm.

Dark blood was soaking through the sheet between her legs.

"Placental abruption," I said. "Get her in room three. Page the neonatal team. Type and cross six units."

"Doc." The paramedic ran alongside the stretcher. "Her mother's the county plow driver out on the Thruway. Dispatch is patching her through. She wants to know if her girl's alive."

"Tell her I'm not letting her die."

I said it before I thought about it, and I meant it.

The operating room was on generator power, lit white and harsh, with half the monitors running on battery.

Roderick was already at the head of the table with his hands moving over the machine, and he looked up when I came through the door.

For a second there was only the two of us, and then it was work.

"Rapid sequence," I told him. "Section now. The baby won't wait."

"Induction in thirty seconds," Roderick said. "Prep her."

The scrub nurse painted the belly orange.

I took the scalpel and cut through skin, fat, and fascia with three firm strokes.

The uterus was dark and purple under the lights, bulging with trapped blood.

"Retractor."

I opened the uterus and the blood came in a rush.

The baby was right there, small and gray and very still.

I got my hand under it and lifted it out, and handed it across without looking.

"Girl. Neonatal, she's yours."
