Chapter 25: The Gas Can

I typed with the oldest man watching me over his coffee.

"Can you send it to me?"

The answer came fast.

"Already did. Check your email. I'm not waiting for a lawyer this time."

The file took four minutes to download in that parking lot.

I watched the little blue bar crawl.

The file opened.

It was the same wide, warped view from above the windshield.

The timestamp in the corner said 12:58 a.m., June 25.

The cabin was dark except for the dashboard glow.

Vincent was driving. Skylar was in the passenger seat in the gray sweater from the diner.

Through the windshield, in the headlights, I could see rusted chain-link.

The forklift with no wheels.

The shark-tooth window.

Then the headlights went off.

The RV rolled another few yards in the dark and stopped.

"This is so stupid," Skylar said on the screen. She was laughing. "We're like spies."

"Keep your voice down."

"Nobody's up. It's one in the morning. They're boat people."

I took the phone and got out of the car.
