Chapter 26: Driving Myself

"I'll call him in the morning," the detective said. "Whoever signed out those keys is going to have a long week."

"Let me see him first," I said.

Troy turned to look at me.

"He's my father," I said. "He should hear it from somebody who isn't reading him his rights."

The detective studied me over the folder.

"He's got a shareholders' meeting Tuesday," she said. "I read the papers too. Don't let him leave the state."

"I'll go tonight."

"You'll go in the morning," Troy said. "After you sleep."

The oldest man drove us both home in the station wagon.

When we pulled up at the gate, the old man turned the engine off and held the keys out to me over the seat.

"You'll want a car," he said.

"I can't take your car."

"It's got a full tank and a bad radio. It knows the way to the coast. You don't have to."

I took the keys.

I left the yard at five-thirty on Monday morning.

Troy stood at the gate in the dark with the dog.

"You want the GPS?" he said.

"No."

Then he stepped back and opened the gate wide.
