Chapter 31: The Sapphire
The detective didn't take the phone.
She looked at it in Skylar's two hands.
"Put it in your bag, Ms. Hallett," she said. "Don't delete anything. You're coming with us too."
"I'm helping you."
"Then you can help me in the car."
They walked Vincent out first.
He went past my chair with an officer on each side.
He didn't look at me.
He looked at the carpet.
Skylar went after him with her tripod folded under her arm and nobody carrying it for her.
Nine days later I read what was on her phone, in a news story like everyone else.
She'd filmed two videos that night.
The first was at 12:31 a.m., at a gas station on US-19.
Vincent at the pump, filling a red can, under the white lights.
Skylar's voice behind the phone, giggling. "Arson era."
Vincent turning around, grinning, putting his finger to his lips.
The second was from the RV's step at 1:08.
An orange glow climbed up behind the shed roof.
Vincent ran out of the dark toward the camera with the can in his hand, laughing.
