Vaughn's POV

The boardroom on the thirty-first floor had a table for twenty.

My father had built the company in that room.

I sat at the head, where he had sat, and watched the partners avoid my eyes.

The largest partner, a man in his seventies who had known me since I was a boy, laid a printout on the table.

It was the headline from this morning.

"We built the Pavilion for the Ansley Lowell Foundation," he said. "It opens Saturday. Four hundred guests, and half the city's press."

"I know the guest list."

"Then you know what the story does to us. A scandal with the Foundation's founder, and an unmarried mother, and a child nobody had heard of."

"The child is my son."

"We understand that. But we need you to say publicly that you were misled, that you were manipulated by this woman, and that you will step back from the Foundation."

I looked at him.

"Misled by whom?"

"By Ms. Haskell."

"The woman who tried to reach me for a month and was stamped REFUSED by someone else's hand?"

"We don't know that."

"I do."

He pushed his glasses up.

"Vaughn, I loved your father. I'm trying to protect what he built. Say the sentence, and this goes away. Don't, and the board will vote you out as chairman at noon."

The room waited.

I thought of Sam's face over the edge of a hospital blanket.

I thought of a woman in a lounge, holding my hand against the wall.
