Chapter 12: The Camera
I took out my phone and showed him the officer's name.
"I already told him," I said. "Today, at one o'clock. Before you texted."
Nate looked at the screen.
"You told a cop about Kendra before you knew about the work order."
"I knew about the driveway. I knew what color she drives."
"Why didn't you say?"
"He told me not to. He said her father would have a lawyer on it by Friday." I put the phone away. "He also told me not to tell you."
Nate nodded slowly.
He didn't look hurt.
He had spent two weeks learning exactly what he deserved.
"Good," he said. "That's the right call."
The officer called me at seven the next morning.
He wanted us both at the station at noon, and he said to come in separate cars and use the back entrance.
We sat side by side at a metal table in a room that smelled like burned coffee.
Nate's hands were folded in front of him.
He had not touched me once, and I noticed that I'd been braced for it.
The officer came in with a laptop and a thin file and shut the door.
"I'm going to be blunt," he said. "I got the gas station tape at nine last night. It's the only angle in the county that matters, and I've watched it forty times."
He turned the screen toward us.
It was black-and-white and grainy.
A fuel pump sat in the foreground, and past it a wide slice of road ran under a streetlight.
A timestamp in the corner read 7:51:58.
"That's the intersection of Delmont and Fourth," the officer said. "Watch the left side."
