Chapter 4: The Post
The next morning Lorna slid her phone across the kitchen table without a word.
I was sitting on a couch cushion she had put on a kitchen chair, because I couldn't sit on anything hard.
The post was from Kendra's account.
It was a photo of Nate walking into Mercy Hill with a gift bag in his hand and his head down.
Under it she had written: "Praying for this family. Some people turn a miracle into a battle. Nate has done nothing but love his daughter. Please send him strength."
It had nine hundred likes.
Under the likes were the comments.
"Imagine locking a dad out of his own baby."
"She left him on CHRISTMAS?"
"Hope that mother gets help."
One of them was from the woman who lived two doors down from our house.
I had watered her tomatoes for three summers.
"Who took that picture?" I asked.
"Somebody who was waiting for him in the lot with a phone," Lorna said.
My own phone buzzed on the table.
It was my office manager.
"Hi Susannah. Hope the baby is okay. A couple of patients have seen a post and are asking. Can you call me when you get a minute? We'll need to talk about the schedule."
I read it twice.
"I've cleaned their teeth for six years," I said.
"Don't answer yet." Lorna took the phone away from me. "Susannah, listen. People will believe whatever she wants for about a week. You don't have to fight it on the internet."
"No."
"Good."
"I'm going to fight it in person."
