Chapter 11: The Second Rule
Nessa's POV
"Treaty," I said again.
Ronan came across the pavement toward me, and I held up a hand.
"Stay there."
He stopped.
"I heard all of it," I said. "The elder, the land, the quiet deal he offered if you sent me home."
"Nessa."
"You told me you'd tell me everything about Cedar Ridge the minute you learned it."
"I know what I said."
"That was my term. The second one. I said it in your kitchen and you said done."
"I know."
His voice was quiet, and he did not look away.
"Then why did I find out from a man in a lot?"
"Because the elder called the night you landed, and I decided you needed to sleep."
"You decided."
"Yes."
"For four days."
"Yes."
"I was in your guest house. I was wearing your mark. I kissed you."
The words came out louder than I wanted.
A woman crossing to her car with a casserole dish looked over and quickly looked away.
"I let you sit beside me on a hotel bed while I told you about my sister," I said. "And the whole time you were holding a deal that would have put me on a plane."
"I never would have taken it."
"I don't know that. You don't get to ask me to trust it."
"Then don't trust it. Trust what I did."
"What you did was decide for me!"
He took one step, and I let him, and he stopped an arm's length away.
"You're right," he said. "It was the exact thing you told me not to do. I knew it when I did it. I told myself I was protecting you."
