Chapter 18: The Elders' Table
The elders' table at Cedar Ridge seated nine, and every chair was full.
Slade sat at the head under his father's photograph.
Peyton sat at his right hand with a lawyer I had never seen, and she did not look at me when I walked in.
The clerk came in behind me, holding Joanie's arm.
Ronan stayed in the hall with the door open, and I knew without turning that he was watching the back of my head.
"Before anyone speaks," Slade said, "I will."
He stood.
He did not have notes, and his hands were not steady.
"Cara Quinlan was my father's daughter," he said to the table. "She was my half sister. Her kidney match was me, and the match was sealed, and I was never told."
The silver-haired elder from the parking lot went very still.
Another elder said, "Slade, that's a serious claim."
"It's in the registry. Anyone may read it."
"Who sealed it?" the silver-haired elder asked.
"The finance director's login."
Every head at the table turned to Peyton.
She laid a hand on her chest and gave a small, hurt laugh.
"Alpha, you're exhausted. You've been without sleep for days, and you're grieving a girl you never met. She has been working on you."
"She has done nothing but tell me the truth."
"Then let the elders see the other truth," Peyton said, and she opened her folder. "Nessa Quinlan stole four hundred and twelve thousand dollars from the Luna account. Here are the signature cards."
She slid three of them down the table.
The silver-haired elder picked up the first one and held it close to the light.
"Read it out," Slade said.
"Nessa Quinlan-Haught," the elder read slowly. "Dated two years ago."
