Chapter 21: The Hearing
The boy stood at the gate in the gray before dawn with a duffel bag at his feet.
He was thin and sunburned, and he could not stop looking at his own hands.
"I'm the donor," he said. "That's what the statement says."
"Are you?" I asked.
"I never got tested. I don't know what a match is."
"Who gave you the statement?"
"Ms. Goelet." His voice cracked. "She paid me six thousand dollars and told me what to read. She said if I didn't, my mother couldn't stay in pack housing."
Ronan stood behind me with his arms folded and let me do it.
"I can't tell you what to say today," I said. "I can't promise you anything. Say what's true, or say nothing. That's all I've got."
He picked up his bag.
"I'll come," he said.
The Lone Star Council hall was a long stone room with seven Alphas on the dais and two hundred wolves in the galleries.
Slade sat at one table with his hands folded.
Peyton sat at the next with her lawyer, in a gray suit with a white collar, and she looked like a woman at a funeral who was bearing it well.
I sat at the third table with Ronan at my shoulder and Joanie behind me.
The chair of the council was an old woman with a hawk's profile.
She struck the table once with her palm.
"The matter before us is the dissolution of a chosen-mate contract between the Alpha of Cedar Ridge and Nessa Quinlan. The Luna has filed. Alpha Haught, you were told of your right to challenge."
"I was."
"Do you challenge?"
Slade stood.
I felt Peyton go rigid at the next table.
